%X The fluxes of water between the main channel and the floodplain control the hydrodynamic of rivers and the exchange of suspended sediments. The seasonal changes of suspended sediments in the rivers and floodplains can be analyzed from orbital images. In this study, 1196 images of the MODIS sensor were used to characterize and understand the processes related to suspended sediment variability in the floodplain Lago Grande de Curuai between 2003 and 2015. The reflectances in the red and near infrared wavelengths were smoothed for outlier removal by the software Timesat. Results showed striking changes in the reflectances in the river and the floodplain between rising, falling and high water stages. In the Amazon river the variation is related to the flood period of the tributaries Solimões, Madeira e Negro. In the floodplain lake, it is observed an exponential increase during low water due to wind action, which promotes the resuspension of suspended sediments. This increase depends on the water stage, where higher values occur in years of drought and the lower values in years of extreme flooding. The entrance of suspension sediments of the river into the floodplain was also observed in the flood period, mainly in years of extreme flooding. The methodology presents great potential to understand the dynamics of floodplains.
